HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Welcome! We are in co-operation with the Library on several fronts! One is with the paper materials that the Society has been storing for many years. These have now been photocopied and, we foresee that these copies will be scanned and added to a digital archive as well as being bound for the main library collection. Another is that we are also in co-operation with the Library with programs to be presented as they arise at the Society Hall and at the Twin Oaks Schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is open to groups, homeschoolers, family groups, individuals. All you have to do is give us a call. If you wish to have a teacher TEACH, we can make arrangements for that! and will need a few days to co-ordinate everything! The Hall is open also to groups for parties (no alcohol!!!), meetings, and special programs that you might have in mind. Our kitchen is available for heating up catered foods but cooking from scratch is not possible. Our Hall is an open area, has chairs and tables sufficient for 85 people. Renting our Hall is another way that we raise funds to support the buildings, property, and programs. The property, slightly over an acre, is flat and grassy with easy parking. How does Art in the Park sound? or re-enactments? or Music on the Grass? Our primary historic fundraiser is the SCHOOLHOUSE CALENDAR. Older issues and individual pages of the calendars are available also for purchase depending on if we still have any! Yes, we do have a listing of the names found within the issues - teachers, students and advertisers! Our newest fundraiser is the republication of the 1994 book, SUMMER ENCHANTMENT: The History of Twin Lakes, Greg Saucerman, on CD. This reissue is in PDF format and offers the reader the ability to slide thru the pages and to enlarge them substantially! In addition to the hall, we currently have three Twin Lakes locations for and purchase: Sentry, Village Hall and the Library. Price per CD is $15.00 but we are offering a discount on 25 or more of $10 each. Any special arrangements for mailing or delivery or pickup should be made directly with the society thru their email address . Both the Hall and the Schoolhouse can be toured if you call ahead and make arrangements. We like to meet people interested in the buildings ~ both of which have been moved to Trevor ~ and in the history of Western Kenosha County! To find us, all you need to do is to reach downtown Trevor in Salem Township, Kenosha County on Highway C and the Railroad tracks. From there, travel west on Hwy C one block to 259th Street and turn North (right) proceeding to 114th Avenue where you will see us on your left. Many know us to be "the home of Jazzercise!" The Society meets once a month, on the first Thursday of the month. Many arrive at 6:30pm to visit and catch up on what has been happening in their lives and around town! At 7:00pm the business meeting starts. HOWEVER, it is always best to call to confirm meetings! We try to have some historical FIND or story in the mix! We also make an appearance at the Kenosha County Fair, where we have attended for many, many years, where we sell our calendars and where we meet with those interested in history but who dont have the luxury to otherwise commit a lot of their time. We enjoy their company and their input to our local history. This year's fair garnered us nearly 300 names for previously unknown students featured in our already published calendars! The action of looking thru our 'problem' pictures brought out new recollections and we had small reunions at our table with others who joined in the effort! The society newsletter is on the drawing board. People interested in receiving this can contact us at wkenoshachs@gmail.com and we will send you a questionnaire to complete to get yourself added to the FRIENDS list. Being a Friend costs you nothing and costs us nothing if you have an email address! But, we would also welcome you as a member which costs only $12.00 a year each December! December is also when we have our Holiday Party! Call to confirm the date this year! We each contribute a dish and some funds for our main entree and vote for our new board members whilst we enjoy each other's company! February 22nd 2009, Sunday, 1PM will be the third annual BLURTitOUT! and will feature Silver Lake, Center Lake, Camp Lake, Salvation Army and Shorewood. The dress is casual, the opportunity to talk about the images you see is exactly what we hope to occur. Oh, yes, refreshments! and good family-like reminisces are what we expect! 2010 will be about Salem and Paddock Lake
So you see, we are a social club as well as advocates for collecting local history and making it available for researchers. WESTERN KENOSHA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, wkenoshachs@gmail.com 262 862 7165 or 262 862 2635 |
